20L, 30L or 35L: which daypack size?
- Up to 20L: summer walks, short loops and trail running. A jacket, water and snacks in a light, close-fitting pack.
- 25–30L: the all-round hillwalking size. Waterproof jacket and trousers, a warm layer, lunch, a flask and first aid.
- 35L: winter walking, group leaders or anyone carrying for two. Room for extra layers, a group shelter or a second person's kit.
Is a 30L backpack too big for a day hike?
No. 30L is the size many hillwalkers settle on, because it takes full waterproofs, a spare layer and food without feeling bulky. You can cinch the compression straps on lighter days.
Should I get a 30L or 40L backpack?
Choose 30L if you are home every night. Go to 40L if you are carrying a sleeping bag, staying in a hostel or B&B, or packing for someone else. See our 40L and 50L hiking rucksacks.
What to look for in a daypack
- A ventilated back, such as Deuter's Aircontact and Rab's ventilated back panels, to cut down sweat on the climb.
- A hip belt, even on a small pack, to stop it swinging on rough ground.
- A hydration sleeve if you prefer a reservoir to bottles.
- A women's fit, such as Deuter's SL daypacks, with a shorter back and shaped straps. See all women's rucksacks.
- Rain protection. Few daypacks are waterproof, so add a rucksack rain cover or keep spare layers in a dry bag.
