Choosing a duffel bag: which size?
- 30–40L for weekends and cabin bags: compact Helly Hansen and Deuter duffels that fit overhead lockers.
- 50–60L for a week away or sports kit: room for boots, a wash bag and a week of clothes.
- 80–140L for expeditions, camping kit and family trips: Vango travel bags and Mountain Equipment kitbags.
Waterproof duffel bags
Mountain Equipment's kitbags use waterproof tarpaulin fabric on a tough nylon base, with padded rucksack straps and a separate compartment to keep wet gear away from dry. They are the choice for boats, base camps and anything that gets thrown in the back of a van. Deuter's duffels use a water-resistant recycled fabric, and Vango's travel bags use a coated ripstop.
Duffel bag or rucksack?
A duffel is easier to pack and live out of when you are travelling by car or plane. A rucksack is better when you have to walk any distance. If you want both, look for stowable backpack straps, or see our travel backpacks.
Duffle bag FAQs
Is it duffel or duffle?
Both are correct. The name comes from Duffel, a town in Belgium where the thick cloth for the original bags was made, and both spellings are in everyday use.
Can I take a duffle bag as carry-on?
Yes, if it is within your airline's cabin size and weight limits. A soft 30L duffel is a common cabin size choice, but check the current limits with your airline before you fly.
What is a duffle bag used for?
Travel, sport and carrying bulky outdoor kit such as tents, climbing gear or wetsuits. The wide opening makes packing and finding things quicker than in a rucksack.
