Choosing a child carrier backpack
- Framed hiking carriers are built for trails and hills. LittleLife's range is rated from 6 months to 3 years, with maximum loads of 15–20kg depending on the carrier, adjustable back systems for adults from around 1.57m to 1.87m, and 12–16 litres of storage for nappies, snacks and layers.
- Kick-out stands on some carriers let you load your child with the carrier standing on the ground.
- Travel-friendly carriers pack down small with a hidden frame, useful if you are flying or short on boot space.
- Soft carriers are lighter and suitable from birth, but are best for town and shorter walks rather than long days on the hill.
Toddler carrier and child carrier FAQs
At what age can a baby go in a hiking carrier?
Our framed carriers are rated from 6 months. Wait until your baby can sit up unaided and hold their head steady. Before that, use a soft carrier, which is suitable from birth.
Is there a carrier for a 2 or 3 year old?
Yes. LittleLife's hiking carriers are rated up to 3 years. Check the maximum load too, which includes your child and anything packed in the carrier.
Can you put a 4 year old in a carrier?
Our current carriers are rated up to 3 years. Always go by the manufacturer's age and maximum load rather than what feels manageable.
Are child carrier backpacks worth it?
If you want to keep hillwalking, yes. A carrier takes you onto trails, beaches and forest paths where a buggy cannot go, and children love the view.
How do I keep my child comfortable in a carrier?
Dress them a layer warmer than you, because they are sitting still while you are working. Check hands and feet on cold days, stop regularly for a stretch, and pack a sun shade or rain cover for Irish weather. Pair the carrier with a daypack for a second adult to carry the extra kit.
