• Hip packs are larger belt packs, with a padded, ventilated back and room for a light layer, a snack and a small bottle.
• Sling and crossbody bags sit across your chest or back. Easy to swing round and open on the move, and harder to pick-pocket, which suits city breaks and airports.

Which size?

• Around 1–3L: phone, keys, cards and a few coins.
• 4–6L: add a light jacket, snacks and a small water bottle for longer walks.
• 8L and above: a tablet or a compact camera as well, for travel days.

What to look for

• A ventilated back panel on hip packs for runs and hikes.
• Zipped pockets inside to keep valuables separate.
• A padded sleeve if you carry a tablet on a crossbody bag.
• Packability. Some sling bags fold into their own pocket, so you can bring one on holiday as a spare day bag.
